Invention Reports

When HU researchers invent IPs, they are required to submit an invention report to the university. The invention may be invented solely by Hokkaido University, or it may be invented jointly with an external entity such as a company.

Solo Invention

In principle, inventions created by HU researchers belong to Hokkaido University. HU researchers who created the invention should fill in the required entries in the Invention Notification Form and submit it to the contact desk for submissions shown below.

Joint Invention

Collaborative research sometimes leads to joint inventions where both Hokkaido University and a company are the inventors.

Important Points
  • If you wish to acquire paten rights, please consult the Institute for the Promotion of Business-Regional Collaboration before making an announcement in a paper or at an academic conference. In some cases the rights to an invention cannot be acquired if it has already been made public.
  • There will be a review after you have submitted your Invention Notification Form, and we will inform you of the decision on whether it is necessary to submit an application. If HU does not submit an application, it is possible for the inventor to submit one as an individual.
